It's fricking Cancer! Just check the top sellers on Amazon and they all require you to use an app to generate a QR code to set up your camera. That app won't work unless you make an account handing over your email, phone number and sometimes even CC number
I've returned 3 so far for not being fit for purpose, one of them openly lying about the app requirement.

I use a PS3 Eye Camera with a Raspberry Pi 3 to monitor my hamster cage, extremely cheap setup with no spyware nonsense.
The resolution is 640×480 though which probably isn't great if you're using it to monitor a large area instead of something small like a hamster cage or a fishtank.
