Is this an insane person thing?
I have had a lifelong struggle with mental illness, and so has my sister, but when I found out she became successful and got a successful husband I was like "well good for her, went further than I thought."
Am I being weird or is that kind of nuts? Tell me I'm being weird.

I read this like 4 times because I'm buzzed and I'm sure I must be missing something, because your sister sent out pictures of herself with her newborn and the father and that's insane because you don't like their strained smiles?

In the past people took a quick photo of the mom with the baby (maybe with dad) and left it at that. Text is enough for everyone interested that mom+baby are healthy. Sending a photo of mom+baby to VERY close relatives, not uncommon.
Now this woman hired a professional, which I've never heard of in that context and is sending around those pics. This is bizarre behavior unless you think in Instagram / showing off becoming a mother. People usually do not send out pictures of these events, let alone hire a photographer.

My hunch at this moment is that in this culture new mothers and newborns are basically holy and hiring a commercial photographer makes it all profane.

It's actually quite common. After delivery, there were ads for photographers in our room. One even came the same day and banged on our door to make sure we didn't want their services. It was very weird to me that the hospital would let them do that.
