I had a "dumb" one and it worked fine for vacuuming dust and hair. It still works in my grandparents' house, both had shitty joints so not having to vacuum as often is good for them.
It's going to suck navigating around chairs and anything that has many legs, running over high doorsteps, rugs are also bit of an enemy but just floor it does fine. Oh yeah wires are also bad, if you have speaker wires or messy charging wires take care of that.
Basically if you have a normal flat floor and clean house go for it, if you live like a college girl don't.

The newer ones are pretty sophisticated, do mapping, empty themselves and probably a lot ,ore I'm forgetting. Probably worth it if you are vacuuming everyday but try to get an extended warranty or something. They break. My mom got a lifetime warranty through sharper image a decade ago and they honor it and keep upgrading her. I use it now and it's good
