My NAS just shit the bed and somehow deleted every single file in my torrent share that had write access enabled

2TB of shit gone and god only knows why. It also reset my password back to the one I had a month ago. I have no idea how. Thing doesn't have internet access so I know I wasn't hacked. There's no disk errors either.

But everything under /shares/Torrents what was writable by anything but root is gone. I assume it has something to do with seagates "simplyraid". No idea wtf that is or why it's enabled by default considering the UI on this shitbox gives me 0 settings for it. Can't change raid mode, can't pool disks, can't do shit

Gotta have an onsite and off site backup

do people really have a 3-2-1 backup strategy for things they're not being paid to manage?

I'd say yes, but mine isn't set up. I'm in the process of setting up my offsite. I'm going to run a server at my parents. I'm going to be lazy and setup a synology though.

I was considering the exact same lol.

I already have a big Synology as my NAS and could probably get a cheaper four bay for backups.

That's reassuring they you have one. I want to set up Wiregurad or similar and then have it back up nightly from my place to theirs. I think I'm going to need an 8 bay synology off the bat. I'm up to 4 logical drives in my home NAS. Or do you think redundancy on the backup is silly?

It has native Tailscale support which I use extensively. They also have a tool for this exact purpose.

I'm using an 8 bay DS1819+, I got it during rona with the stimmy and it's been rock solid. You certainly pay a premium but it's worth it.

No i think redundancy on the backup a good idea.

I'll read up. My plan is after the new year order the system, though Synology is doing this stupid "only our drives work" bullshitthey you need to hack around to get other drives to work.

:marseyhmm:

Based off using their SSDs I think it might just prevent you from doing extra firmware things.

That's very Synology though, it'll complain about the RAM you use unless it's Synology branded. Works fine they just won't do support requests (that kind of hurts the value proposition for small businesses).

They started doing it with their home models on HDD. The lists used to be full of third-party drives from Seagate, and WD, but now if you look at new models they only list their drives as compatible. Which means you don't get SMART monitoring and get warning spam.
