I just don't get it. Like yeah you hate gay people, but also isn't constantly thinking about and waiting to meet up with gay people also pretty gay? I feel like calling these homophobes gay would unironically get some of them to stop.

Pretty much, it's poor southern behavior. The freed blacks after the civil war more or less adopted the behavior of poor whites. There's even articles from northern blacks during the great migration that basically said "Don't confuse us with them."

The 1st KKK is not all that different from 20th century Black Panther Party. There are a lot of parallels, including:
  • Ethnic requirements for joining,
  • Use of terrorism to achieve goals,
  • Use of media to spread messages from "civilian" side sympathizers,
  • Civil rights bend in propaganda, ideas of racial liberation,
  • Militant rhetoric and sourcing of membership from military veterans.
  • Political advocacy on the basis of racial blocs.
All in all, the Klan was at least successful in one iteration or another until its dissolution in the 80s thanks to the SPLC. (If you're counting the largest Klan group as representative of the Klan nationally, that is.)
