He had sensitive documents that he held on to for no strategic reason after he exited the white house. Then ignored polite requests to return the documents. Which of course promoted the use of force. His life was placed in danger when he ran for president, when he cozied up to Russia, when he stopped giving a frick generally. He pissed off tons of people, applied the usual IDGAF attitude that you can freely throw around when you're a business man - which doesn't work when you're a president and need to manage diplomacy and a reputation - and now is facing the repercussions for it. I think all things considered he got off easy for what could have been grand treason charges, even if it was treason through incompetency.
Again there's probably a narrative of deep state subterfuge and misdeeds going on behind the scenes, I would not take Trumps word for that narrative no matter how close he was to the intelligence agencies. If he showed an ounce of authenticity, of actually wanting to bring to light these misdeeds, he would not be talking about in this way. He would certainly not be trying to leverage these misdeeds for his own personal gain (shilling his products, or his reelection campaign for example).

Yeah Trump's a character and he has not acted in a way that maximized his safety. But I feel like I've miscommunicated in some way- my main concern is how people conceptualize state actions so abstractly and view them as acts of nature such that they don't even consider them actions of individuals, even as they are carried out by individuals.
The danger trump faced was predictable and he played no small role in it coming about. But that goes for violent interactions with criminals too.
