They came to power in 2010, when the 2008 financial crisis was still having an impact. They promised "fiscal responsibility". The Labour leader (Gordon Brown) had previously been Chancellor under Tony Blair, so it was easy to spin it as all his fault. Even then, they needed a coalition with the Liberal Democrats (centrists).

The next election was in 2015. Things were going okay. The economy had bounced back and the impact of cuts to public services hadn't really sunk in. The Lib Dems were perceived as weak and alienated a lot of their voters in the process, so in the next election (2015), the Conservatives won a majority. At the same time, the UK Independence Party was growing, so PM Cameron offered a referendum on EU membership.

Throughout this, Labour were basically useless. They swung harder left under Milliband (2010-2015) and then went even further under Corbyn.

Starmer has brought Labour back to the centre, He's promising to be tougher on immigration, which the Conservatives have failed to deal with. He will raise taxes and public spending somewhat, Labour have been noticeably quieter on "culture war" issues since he became leader, but that's not guaranteed to last at all.
