it's an anti-parasite drug, that has been administered more than 3 billion times to humans, with very mild and well-understood side effects.
it's not not effective against viruses (except in in vitro experiments with ridiculous concentrations), but it's harmless, it's ultra-cheap (not patented and easy to produce), and a couple percent of the population have latent parasites inside them that are never diagnosed and negatively affect their well-being.
