Medically assisted suicide is semi-legal in the US and I've had several relatives take that way out. What happens is once you are in a particular stage of palliative care, you are being pumped full of opiates. The machine dispenses a certain quantity of the opiate (fentanyl these days) at pre-specified intervals, and if your pain is acute, you can also push a button to dispense more. There is a safety on this button to prevent you from OD'ing, but if it looks like you aren't going to recover, the doctor can offer to remove the safety. My grandmother's death is listed as kidney failure, but she was actually riding the dragon.
