Online and screen based media fills a role between being awake and being asleep, with us closer to the experience of being asleep than being awake. i.e. Being zoned out. If humans never slept nor had any experience of dreaming, there is a chance TV and movies would have never taken off the way they did. At least not as entertainment sources. The same ability to maintain suspension of disbelief while dreaming is what allows humans to maintain suspension of disbelief while watching TV or looking at a phone screen. A species that cannot dream will also be unable to care about non-physical entertainment sources as it would all be a lesser form of entertainment compared to the real thing, and the species would be aware of that at all times. Dreams are what habituate us to abstractions and the ability to believe in half baked ideas. Without dreams, the modern day entertainment industry could never exist.
