Just to make this clear: The US didn't get rid of the draft because of the incessant crying and wringing from hippies. It got rid of the draft because Nixon and Kissinger made the astute observation that a lot of the anti-war activist demonstrations were made up of lazy Boomers who just wanted to smoke reefer and listen to rock & roll all day. As soon as they got rid of the draft, their theory was validated as all those anti-war activist groups shrunk in size considerably and had a much harder time getting hippies to join their protests now that getting sent off to war was no longer an issue for them. Nixon had already made plans to reel in the scope of the war in Vietnam anyway, so killing the draft and making the service volunteer only was a low price to pay in exchange for less anti-war propaganda.

TLDR; hippies didn't end the draft. Tricky Peepee ended it to cripple the anti-war activists in the country.

This is not a new development. AFAIK both the pod and the sub started out as part of the broader chapoverse.

A&D obviously never had any actual political convictions but they started out as Bernie supporters. The tankie part of the user base has always been there.

Yeah but I found the pod to be focused more around bohemian sentiments of culture. Kinda like talking about politics the same way rdrama talks about them, lacking any real conviction and mostly focused on a tangentially related objective (rdrama: sneed A&D: girl vibes and goss). Even though I disagreed with their politics I never felt personally offended because they never asserted any morality over their political leanings. When the sub started doing it a la tankies that's when I got turned off. Unaware and unwilling to joke about themselves or their ideology - it just stops being fun.

I think a lot of people need to let go of ideological labels and just embrace a "This probably works for this situation" policy of politics. Like, IDK when was the last time the two largest parties in the USA, or even the largest parties in the EU didn't have a stance on Issue X or a position on Contentious Issue Z. It used to be that sometimes there were gaps on policy where no one gave a shit, and it was just whatever works until mass political movements made everything ideological and political.

Tankies, fascists, neoliberals, why not just get out some duct tape and the interns and write good legislation?
