How can any American defend their intelligence agencies and military funding these Islamist freedom-fighters/terrorists when history has shown this backfires horribly?
And how can extremist Muslims not see that their militant groups just serve was proxy militias for competing outside powers?

The only groups supported by the US in Syria are SDF (Kurds) and Syrian Free Army (secular, not very effective). And even for these the support is very limited.
The group that is currently attacking Aleppo is HTS, it's quietly supported by Turkey and some gulf states. There are rumors that SNA will soon join the offensive, this one is openly supported by Turkey.

Nah many in the FSA were aligned with Al-Nusra and Al-Qaeda during Timber Sycamore. It was a supremely r-slurred project that allowed American weapons to land in the hands of terrorists. The "secular" label was made up by American glowies to justify it to Obama.
HTS is a conglomerate of former Al-Qaeda along with the "moderate" rebels the US has supported.

Barely. I don't don't remember how they call themselves these days, but they've been reduced to a tiny force holed up in the US base near the Jordan border.

The middle east requires careful planning and maintenance of the balance of power, which is why we give r-slurred monkeys we can't control a bunch of guns and let it spiral.

How many times do have to go through this song and dance until we learn that brutal dictators are actually preferable to random militants that have no idea of how to run a functional government?

I don't think the US is still funding the rebels. I think Turkey is doing most of the funding.
