Historical timeline of Muslims being "tolerant" towards the Jews
1. In the 7th century, Islam was quite new but Muhammed's atrocities with Jews being expelled from Arabia and made to pay Jizyah in newly conquered areas
2. In the 8th century, Umayyads banned Jews from worshipping at the Temple Mound. In Morocco, under Idris I, Jews were forced to provide the rulers Harem with annual virgins from their own women and girls, otherwise the Amir would attack and expel them.
3. In the 9th century, the dress code and the first yellow badge was imposed on Jews and other minorities. If you look for the origins of the yellow star that the Nazis enforced, it originated in the Abbasid Caliphate. Annihilation of Jewish cemeteries continued and were replaced by Muslim graves.
4. In the 10th century, there were atleast 3 genocides, most notably under the Andalusian leader Al Mansur, who massacred Jews and captured their belongings. Andalusia was Spain under Islamic rule and is claimed to be very tolerant by Islamic apologists. It was more tolerant than other Muslim kingdoms but tolerant?
5. The Granada massacre of 1066 : there was a time of tolerance in Andalusia. Joseph ibn Naghrela was a Jewish advisor in Andalusia. The Muslims did not like the fact that he was considered equal to the Muslims and had authority. A large mob of Muslims stormed the palace in Granada, crucified Joesph and massacred the Jewish population of the city. Reports find that 4000 people died in one day. Only 25 years later, the Almoravids, who took control of the city, did another massacre.
6. In the 11th century, another incident occured in the Fatimid Caliphate which was a Shia Caliphate. Direct orders from the leader of the Caliphate, synagogues, artefacts and scriptures were destroyed and even more pronounced dress codes were instated for Jews and Chrsistians. Jews were made to wear golden calves and Christians were made to wear heavy crosses around their necks whilst also wearing noticeable black turbans. While bathing, Jews and Christians were forced to wear bells so that everyone could notice that a Jew or Christian was coming. The Fatimid Caliphate was accused by the Sunni Abbasid Caliphate of being descendents of Jews in spite of being hostile towards the Jews, a regular insult being thrown around in the Islamic world even today.
7. In the 12th century, Jews were exiled, converted or killed in Morocco. They were barred from residing in Marrakesh and were given the death penalty for existing. One notable incident in this century was the massacre of over a 100000 Jews in Morocco. Other massacres occured in Spain, by Muslims. A Jew who fled from the massacres in Spain was a poet Judah Halevi who wrote significant poems about Jewish suffering after the massacres and about the return to the Holy Land.
8. Another killing of a Jewish advisor followed by a massacre happened in the 13th century in Persia where the Mongol ruler appointed a Jewish advisor which was unacceptable by Muslims. Buddhists, Christians and others were somewhat tolerated.
9. In the 14th century, there were multiple massacres and conversions in Egypt, Syria, Baghdad and other lands.
10. In the 15th century, a killing of an advisor and a massacre of Jews occured in Morocco. In Egypt, Jews were forced to pay a huge amount of gold and were impoverished. Mali criminalized being a Jew.
11. Massacres happened in Egypt in the 16th century. Many fled to other lands and the remaining Jews informed others to keep a low profile. This didn't make the situation better but this did prevent accusations and attacks by the Muslims.
12. In the 17th century, Persia peaked in the persecution of Jews. The Safavid monarchy spread propoganda in the land that Jews were filthy and brought curses and shame on the Muslims. Jews were forcibly converted, massacred and exiled. Other massacres and expulsions, especially in North Africa continued.
13. In the 18th century, a plague was blamed on the Jews in Algeria, followed by exiling of Jews and destruction of synagogues and anything Jewish. In North Africa, Jews were massacred, exiled and plundered by mobs and rulers. In Morocco, in more than 3 separate instances, the Jews were almost entirely eradicated.
14. In the 19th century, there were atleast 15 massacres, expulsions, mass conversions and robberies against Jews in the Islamic world, mainly in Algeria, Persia, Syria, Tunisia, Baghdad, Morocco and other regions under the Persians, Ottomans and other rulers.
15. In the 20th century, there are about 20 incidents against Jews in the Islamic world like the Thrace pogroms in Turkey, Constantine pogrom in Algeria, Farhood pogrom in Iraq, riots of Tripolitania, Cairo bombings…and many others. There was a Jewish exodus in this century, where most Jews in the Middle East and North Africa fled, bringing down the Jewish population in the Muslim lands, mostly the Arabic speaking ones, from a million to about 8000.
