I'm not a particularly culturally 'in-tuned' Malayalee, but the more I volunteer in ethnic Indian spaces in Singapore, the more I feel like non-Tamils are there just to be token minority-minorities.

Naw, there's actually a wide spectrum of brown when it comes to Indians, and it's pretty important to them - to the point where they will even use skin lightening products like Michael Jackson did. You know how Indians used to have an economic caste system? Well, that caste system used to line up awfully closely with skin color. So basically the darker you are in India, the more likely it is that your family used to be lower caste.
My understanding is that they're currently in the process of breaking down those stereotypes in much the same way as the civil rights movement for blacks started in the U.S. but unlike us they haven't yet achieved full equality yet so it's still a very sensitive topic).

I mean they weren't pic related dark, just different shades of brown.
I don't think I've seen a single person who wasn't a tourist who could walk by in Budapest and I could have assumed he was a native by skin colour. (except if it's a gypsy)
