I'm not a particularly culturally 'in-tuned' Malayalee, but the more I volunteer in ethnic Indian spaces in Singapore, the more I feel like non-Tamils are there just to be token minority-minorities.

In the British Empire, they had Indians do most of the work. Certain kinds of Indians would be the soldiers, others the administrators. The police were Sikhs. Tamils were brought in for less-skilled labor if there was a shortage somewhere. So you end up with Indians in Uganda, Malaysia, Hong Kong, etc.

There weren't many people living there at the time. So some Indians were brought in and some Malays from nearby, but most of the population came from China. In Malaya when there was a boom in rubber and tin in the early 1900s they did the same thing.
