The platform allowed users to post a myriad of different content, from photos and gifs to music and text entries. From its inception, Karp prioritized features that he believed would cultivate the most creativity — and rejected the monetary and status driven incentives that he thought other platforms, such as YouTube and Facebook, relied on to drive use.

I don't know how that foid CEO who bungled this up is still operating in the Valley. She should've gotten the old torches and pitchforks treatment.

It was already obvious by then that there was no way Yahoo was going to survive. They really should have just accepted that all they had left was a brand name recognized by people like my mom who "just wants my Yahoo". It would at least be worth something to Facebook so they could get more data to mine from boomers using it as their home page.

And that wasnt really even their choice. They got yeeted from the app store and realized they couldn't moderate their own site to the liking of Apple and the rest is history.

The fact that Tumblr didn’t require user’s true identities, and that adult-oriented content permeated the platform, steered away potential advertisers.

But Yahoo was faced with an undeniable reality — the fact that Tumblr had never really managed to become profitable.

So you need your users to dox themselves in order to make money, which you do so in the most cancerous way possible aka advertising. I guess good sites are generally never going to be very profitable, but still it's a sad state of existence for the internet.

Why didn’t they just run HRT ads?

Meanwhile they could have just set up a subscription service, people were such diehards for the platform I could see it working out somewhat.

I really like current tumblr. It's still super liberal but the unhinged ones mostly moved to twitter and tiktok.

tbh it was extremely based of them to burn through a billion dollars from big tech and not kneel to the machine. Unlike certain other sites who sold their souls chasing a profitable IPO.

This; you don't see the site-spanning callout culture and spats anymore, arguments are isolated and funnymen are fairly universally despised now. Honestly banning porn was the best thing to happen to tumblr. :marseywholesome:
