Adblockers take a temporary :marseyw: as Google postpones MV2 shutoff in Chrome stable to June 2023

https://developer.chrome.com/blog/more-mv2-transition

Barely a W, but an :marseyl: in the future unless Google commits to letting adblockers be adblockers in Chrome.

Generated from TLDR This:

Last year, we announced a timeline for the phasing out of Manifest V2 extensions as we shift our focus to Manifest V3.

In support of that goal, we’re providing more details about how Chrome will phase out Manifest V2 support.

Additional details may be found on our Manifest V2 support timeline page.

We also have a few updates on how the phase-out will look on the Chrome Web Store: In January 2023 , use of Manifest V3 will become a prerequisite for the Featured badge as we raise the security bar for extensions we highlight in the store.

All existing Manifest V2 items with visibility set to Public at that time will have their visibility changed to Unlisted.

In addition, we have been working with extension developers to improve Manifest V3 and to incorporate feedback from our community.

I ran into something tonight that I'm sure is related. Suddenly youtube started putting promoted content directly into search results without separating it in any way.

I search for a German monk who wrote organ music in the 1400s and the 3rd result is a "comedian" who I don't like talking about today's hurricane. Notice that there is no "more" or anything to separate it from the actual search results. Below there was a bunch of rightoid and leftoid ragebait videos mixed in with real search results. When I reload, it doesn't do that anymore. So I guess it's gotta be an experiment.

Didn't the courts rule that this was illegal?

Youtube search and recommendations has grown so horrendously bad the last five years, that it is practically unusable.

Is there an alternative or something like nitter for it?

Yeah, I don't even try anymore. I've tried using the like and dislike buttons but it's almost completely useless. The shit they try to peddle to me I would never watch in a million years, so it's not like they're somehow winning. They're just incredibly fricking incompetent. I'm amazed that nobody has made a website yet that just gives you actually good youtube recommendations. Or maybe a thousand people have and they were all quietly bought out by Google and shut down.

They give you 8 recommendations from the last dozen Youtube channels you watched, half of it is irrelevant, repetitive nonsense peddled by the algorithm that in its infinite wisdom has deduced that you watching a cringe compilation in 2019 now means you want 30 cringe compilations in your recommendations. It never shows you any new shit anymore (because god forbid Youtube radicalise anyone from being a neoliberal tool) like Old Youtube used to, those priceless clips of some r-slur filming something inexplicably funny in 2007.

Honestly, I don't know if Google is trying to kill Youtube or if the monstrosity is too big to die but the current state of Youtube looks like what someone intent on its destruction would do. No, Youtube, you decrepit mongrel, I don't want 50+ old videos from my favourite Youtuber in my recommendations, I've already watched all his videos, show me something fricking new!

What I'm seeing today is different. It happened again:

Same search for "Conrad Paumann". I get a Forgotten Weapons video from today, a rightoid schizo video with 36k views, and a leftoid CNN video. These are the same results I got planted the last time they did this. It's clearly not trying to be clickbait, it's a test to see which wingcuck video I click on so they can put me in a category.

Yep, the algorithm pulls tests like this regularly, if you click any one of those videos, it will slap you in the category and start peddling you your Big Tech variety of poison. Nothing new, I noticed Youtube Search giving me schizo results completely unrelated to my search, usually three or four videos down, clearly promoted/algorithm bait bullshit that just makes the user experience more limited and worse. Frick Youtube.

That is the most glowing screenshot I’ve ever seen.

I think TikTok will just start stepping entirely on Googles turf with long form videos, and they'll do it by having actual functional search algorithms that give you what you want (plus booba).

I only use youtube because I know what I want on youtube, it's the same channels I've been watching for half a decade at this point. If I was just starting youtube now as a zoomer, I'd be bored and off the app entirely as nothing good gets recommended.
