New PayPal Policy Lets Company Pull $2,500 From Users’ Accounts If They Promote ‘Misinformation’

A new policy update from PayPal will permit the firm to sanction users who advance purported “misinformation” or present risks to user “wellbeing.”

Among the changes are prohibitions on “the sending, posting, or publication of any messages, content, or materials” that “promote misinformation” or “present a risk to user safety or wellbeing.”

Whatever motivation PayPal has for establishing these vague new categories of prohibited expression, they will almost certainly have a severe chilling effect on users’ speech.

The organization has defended clients such as actor and comedian Russell Brand, who recently moved his show from YouTube to Rumble in reaction to censorship from the former platform.

Roughly one-third of Free Speech Union members rely upon PayPal to process their membership dues — although the company gave no explanation to Young for the suspension beyond mentioning a breach of the acceptable use policy.

We’ve seen social media companies use similar policies to stifle free speech on their platforms.

It's amazing how certain powerful Americans decided to get around the pesky First Ammendment by privatising mass censorship and oppression.

Unfortunately, because the rest of Western Civilisation follows the American zeitgeist like rats to the piper, the rest of us are subject to both private and state sanction.

>If only we nationalized media, then the oppression and censorship would stop

If "powerful Americans" includes government officials, okay. If not, then it's malding about private companies not being beholden to the 1A. :marseyshrug:

Alternatively, aside from nationalizing media, what's the feasible option? You can't really have 1A over private entities.

They're number than a diabetic's foot, I'm afraid.

Nope, I'm nooticing how and why people are subject to both private and state censorship in current year + 7. I'm not interested in lolbertarian knee-jerk philosophising.

>doesn't clarify anything

So you're basically blaming "them," while having nothing defensible against totalitarianism or further state intervention into people's freedom. It's /pol/philosophy, which fits redditors' and Dramatards' beliefs well enough.
