OP's story reads like a bad breakup story. That is, not a story about a bad breakup but a badly-written story that's so full of conspicuous holes that you expect that OP is either intentionally omitting important context or alternatively is just so unfit to relay facts competently that it throws their entire narrative into question. 8 publications is a lot and would normally be enough to easily string together into a thesis. Does the fact that he couldn't do this mean his prof was being unreasonable, or alternatively that his contributions on the papers were minor and/or the papers do not have a common research theme? etc. etc.
