back in the day when there were no torrents people downloaded pirated shit from xdcc bots on irc servers. there were queues you had to join before you got the file, but since internet was shit back then a single download of 700mb over a 256kbit line used to take ages and then if it failed midway you were kicked out and sent to the back of the queue and sometimes couldn't even resume the downloaded file
