How fast should one strive to be?

I’m reading this book on programming in python, and I’m wondering how fast the average developer is versus the average novice? I know it’s likely different depending on project, language and such, but it’s like, is it normal to take a week to hack together a telegram chat bot for a intermediately experienced dev? Are project lengths measured in weeks or days?

Most development is just maintenance, microservices, or adding to a monolith (new features) tbh, very rarely will you get a project to create something from scratch.

Projects are measured in months and years.

Ok, so I’m not like, expected to churn out code like a social scientist churns out research papers.

Maybe if youre at a startup trying to put together a product for more funding, but in most regular companies, no.

It also depends on the pace of the projects and workplace. I had some jobs where I was pumping out features daily, and some where the work came in spurts - 1 month of intense work followed by 4 months of bug fixing and not really doing much.

As you gain more seniority, you'll probably be coding even less.

Ok, interesting. I appreciate the perspective. Thank you for your time.
