So how often does it report you to the CCP?

I don't think they even bother on the hw level. It's incredibly slow and cost optimized I think this was supposed to be the People's Laptop. I'll have to upload the Debian fork onto Internet Archive.

It got on my radar because Stallman used one (fully free BIOS), who is extremely anti-glowie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman#Activism (Ctrl-F 'Lemote')

@chiobu are there any mainlanders here? (I know you're not Chinese)

@nekobit is this your kind of machine? It's slow and obscure.

you mean mainland users? bruh i've posted my ID which shows my race here before...

Yeah mainland chinese, no Taiwan or HK. These are very common there.

You're singapore right?

These are actually common in the mainland? I thought (pirated) Windows was dominant.

They probably run pirated windows on these i would assume

If they're MIPS machines then they can't run Windows.

Ok nerd

MIPS chip makes that very very difficult. I know MS isn’t completely bound by x86 and has run on different arches before but there’s no software to run if you were to even get an image on there. Same issue ARM is having with Windows.

The guy I got it from said there were plenty just hanging out unsold. This one was brand new in box. Battery is completely shot of course.

I don’t know if they were popular but they definitely made a ton of the suckers.

@chiobu is actually a Filipino legally named Boy. He can't afford shoes because he owes a lot of money to his wife, aka JinxThinker. Fun fact, he's related to Duterte. True story!

So is Debian...

Not a Chinese fork.

I think you can run Debian but it’s not supported even they they do have some mips64el images scattered around. OpenBSD has literal install documentation telling you “type load /dev/fs/ext2@wd0/boot/boot” and such.

Okay, so I gots to ask...

You've brought up multiple times in this thread that it's slow as frick like it's a feature?

Do ccp glowchinx triangulate faster on wrongthinkers with faster computers?

It's MIPS so it's basically lacking all the additional software and hardware optimization that x86 and ARM benefit from due to their (respective) immense markets and years of industry involvement (decades in the case of x86).

I would be able to explain this in very simple terms if Windows Phone/Windows ARM had ever gained any appreciable marketshare

Can't cleanly use a MacOS vs iOS analogy anymore either now thanks to the M1

Upmarseyd solely for the pfp, your metalcore straggy profile song sucks tho, I forget the name of the band but I remember the singer was a mulatto who tried to convince himself he was in an actual metal band. Jeez It's on my mind rn I just cant remember it? They were on a need for speed soundtrack one time, also saw them live 2005 ozzfest. FRICK! What is that has-been band's name?

Lmao thanks uhh I made it my profile theme because it's the credits music for the second Resident Evil movie. Google says it's Killswitch Engage. It is their only song I have ever listened to.

Very fun movie for what it is. Baybee.

Feature? No I mean it’s the biggest limitation. If you compile software (the only way to install stuff ATM, the binary packages are missing) it takes weeks for even simple stuff to finish and it’s a long “start -> fail -> fix -> start” cycle.

The laptop is from 2008 and was slow at the time. Not a glowie thing, I file it with my 8 bit computers - as cool toys/curiosities

I wonder if it can run on Qemu MIPS :marseyhmm:

Jump in the discussion.

I think the qemu fork was broken last I tried. It's mips64el - note the little endianess
