Jan 20 (Reuters) - Google's parent Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) is eliminating about 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its workforce, the company said Friday, in the latest cuts to shake the technology sector.

Sundar Pichai, Alphabet's CEO, said in a staff memo shared with Reuters that the company had rapidly expanded headcount in recent years "for a different economic reality than the one we face today."

"I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here," he said.

The cuts come days after rival Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) said it would lay off 10,000 workers.

Alphabet's job losses affect teams across the company including recruiting and some corporate functions, as well as some engineering and products teams.

The layoffs are global and impact U.S. staff immediately.

Alphabet has already emailed affected employees, the memo said, while the process will take longer in other countries due to local employment laws and practices.

The news comes during a period of economic uncertainty as well as technological promise, in which Google and Microsoft have been investing in a burgeoning area of software known as generative artificial intelligence.

"I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI," Pichai said in the note.

Reuters was first to report the news.

Key difference here is that there aren't twice as many electricians/plumbers/doctors as we need.

I'm so glad I stayed away from big tech. I could have got in, not based on my merit, but probably because of my diversity points, which would have made me feel like shit.

happiness isn't about big money and stepping over poo poo on your way to work :(

happiness isn't about making another google vaporware and getting axed

I have job satisfaction because I know the stuff I make for local boomers is going to be used in 10 years and needs to be designed to be future proofed

the feeling of placing an order from a mom and pop restaurant with a custom website and thinking "this website is still as nice af like the day when I made it several years ago"

I make about as much as my tradie brothers, maybe slightly more, but why would I want to make many times more money and not be able to grill with my brothers anymore because I live far away in some coastal heck area eating veggie burgers with Asian and "South Asians" complaining about white people constantly? :(

I burned out after my very first dev job because I was building things I didn't care about which didn't matter to anyone but the owners trying to grift venture capital. I unironically considered throwing myself off the top of my apartment complex a couple times.

yeah I know deep down I don't have what it takes to deal with that kind of bs

maybe it would be different if I had a personal mission that made it worth enduring, like someone I love has cancer and I need to make money for them, or I want to move myself and my family to the US

it's crazy to read about the lives of silicon valley people and they are talking about how their nootropics for performancemaxxing and how it might interact with their prescription happy pills and anxiety meds, and they just pretend like their life is GREAT all the time, "look at my battlestation with urban views (that I never use), haha"

When I was in college I read a lot of books about the OGs of the tech sphere. The guys who were genuine trailblazers in the 70s-80s doing nerd shit that nobody really understood the value of yet. Those guys were building shit that mattered, and that was fricking cool. Silicon Valley as it exists today is just pathetic, and honestly I have nothing but disdain and contempt for the people who work in the modern tech sphere. So when I wake up and find out 12,000 pieces of shit got laid off from Google it honestly makes my Friday.

I mean I understand it to an extent but grindmaxxing for five years in your 20s is a good move. A senior position at MANGA will let you work remote anywhere you want.
