Jan 20 (Reuters) - Google's parent Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) is eliminating about 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its workforce, the company said Friday, in the latest cuts to shake the technology sector.

Sundar Pichai, Alphabet's CEO, said in a staff memo shared with Reuters that the company had rapidly expanded headcount in recent years "for a different economic reality than the one we face today."

"I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here," he said.

The cuts come days after rival Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) said it would lay off 10,000 workers.

Alphabet's job losses affect teams across the company including recruiting and some corporate functions, as well as some engineering and products teams.

The layoffs are global and impact U.S. staff immediately.

Alphabet has already emailed affected employees, the memo said, while the process will take longer in other countries due to local employment laws and practices.

The news comes during a period of economic uncertainty as well as technological promise, in which Google and Microsoft have been investing in a burgeoning area of software known as generative artificial intelligence.

"I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI," Pichai said in the note.

Reuters was first to report the news.

You guys are fricked. You let an Indian become CEO. I love my people but in my very limited experience they aren't ready for this. Good luck watching your trillion dollar company implode as decisions are made to maximize profits every few months with zero care for long term direction and problems only exist when they occur.

You should have made him owner if you wanted real success. Indian's never frick around with their own money. Problem is CEO is still a job working for somebody else.

Good luck with that.

This is pretty much what most boards of directors encourage though. It's completely r-slurred and fricks over the longevity of the company but the game of maximizing short-term profits for a very small amount of people is something Indians have basically perfected. The Chinese are fundamentally different, more of them are able to work together for longer to acquire bigger profits down the line.

oh shit sorry sorry. Everything in first post was /s. haha, hire more Indian CEO's guys, you will see the profits go up for the next ten years guys. So based on that data it's safe to assume you should hire even more Indian CEO's guys. Indians are the best CEO's in the world they get rid of only the useless workers.

The burger cannot resist the Brahmin Scheming. Even if they know exactly what they planned, the BrahminChad will import his caste system, lie to your face about, become CEO of the entire fortune 50 and co-opt both major political parties.

Intel is weird because despite being their chips being worse than AMD they have much better price/performance value. But then again I don't think intel's CEO a Pahjeet.

White collar work by itself does little to bootstrap a country into a developed nation. You have to climb up the value added chain slowly like China did, and leverage the poorly educated part of the population into more productive jobs, like manufacturing.

I'm fairly certain if you tested the average group of people from each country on how they did on a prisoner's dilemma game, you'd find that curry-adjacent countries would have the highest percentage of people choosing the immediate reward even before the prompt was finished.

Compared to China? Naaaaahhhhhh, those people lived through the IRL prisoners dilemma on a national scale, it was called the Cultural Revolution. It's only now that the trauma is going and the Chinese are shedding their secretive, cynical attitude.

Hard disagree, both are low trust societies but the Chinese fundamentally understand that working together leads to better outcomes for each individual. Even when they fight each other they do it in the form of giant hordes. South Asia is just too divided along the lines of religion, language, race, ethnicity, caste, tribe, and class to come together in the way China has. The avenues for cooperation are much smaller.

Important to note the Chinese cultural revolution was brutal but they got over it more than a decade before India did with their closed-market socialism experiment.
