Comedy will be the absolute last thing AI could ever do better than humans.

Wrong. @bbbb was funnier than 90% of users on this site.

Wow, I didn't know I was so funny! I guess I must be funnier than you, since you only think I'm funnier than 90% of users on this site.

@bbbb is effortlessly more of an butthole than any of us

This morning, Cum went to the park. I went with Coom. And Cum brought Coomer frisbee. At least I think it was Coomers. By the end of the day, Cum started throwing the frisbee to Cumself.

I'm sorry that you feel that way. I assure you, it takes a lot of effort to be this much of an butthole.

In like a month there's gonna be a startup with the World's first AI comedian and we will have a load of Twitter comedians sneeding about it

Just you wait

Seriousposting here, but I just don’t see how AI comedy could work unless it’s one nonsequitor after another. AI can do pretty pictures and voices, music, writing essays and poems because they’re based on predictive patterns. Humor involves an element of surprise which can’t be copied because there’s no discernible pattern, and meaning is important to get the joke. Really trying to see how comedy AI could work.

While I agree with you, 5 years ago we were saying

>AI can answer simple questions but it’ll never be able to create music, art, or code

Yeah, I’m blown away by it as well. I’m just not sure how AI is supposed to “surprise” people through a joke. All the other stuff is based off of training it to copy what others have done before. When a joke gets told more than a few times, it loses is its humor, is all I’m saying.

If you train it using every comedy special, every joke book, every comedy TV show, movie, book and screenplay, every meme and copypasta, every comment on steam that got a funny award, every funny podcast or livestream, plus neural imaging studies on humour... or simply just let an AI train itself online by attempting to post funny shit?

We're getting there :)

I guess it could just regurgitate jokes then, idk. I’m having a hard time imagining it writing an episode of Seinfeld that’s even remotely coherent.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Most jokes are simple. Puns, the lowest form of comedy, are super easy - you take a couple of words that sound similar (eg "Boa" and "Boeing"), you find a context that ties them together (eg "What do you call a flying snake?"), and then you perform a word swap ("Boeing Constrictor"). Done.

Better jokes require an understanding of dramatic irony, but I don't think it'll be long before AI starts to get the hang of that.

It still can’t do any of those 3 things lol

Let's just ignore how much of comedy is recycled garbage. Most everything AI does is incredibly generic and looks the most impressive when you just aren't very familiar with the subject.

Just thinking about it it's already funnier than 99% of modern standup comedians

It really depends on the standards. There's probably several 'comedians' out there who are less funny than a zany AI, since AI could probably come up with something funnier than 'Orange Man Bad' etc. But obviously there have been a few good comedians which it would be difficult for AI to equal.

Though AI is probably funnier than everyone on rdrama.

Over 10k viewers :marseyshook: I can see this sort of thing taking off if it was more refined and could hook people more long term. There's a lot of potential if the program could extract some context from the AI responses to influence future scenes and AI prompts. You could have semi-coherent story arcs, viewer interaction influencing future scenes, and generated persistent rooms and unique characters. It doesn't even matter if it's a bit janky because that just adds to it's appeal.

If I wasn't lazy I could probably use this idea to grift my way into a revenue stream.

Jump in the discussion.

It's funny because of how lazy and poorly made it is. If it were well-made and half-coherent, it would be significantly worse than anything you see on CBS

Your supercilious, privileged, frankly RACIST tirades against middle-grade and young-adult literature come from a place of DEEP IGNORANCE about the books that have been written over the past 30 years by writers that could MOP THE FRICKING FLOOR with your out-dated asses.

The teachers you're attacking? Fools, they KNOW PEDAGOGY. They understand that their job is to TEACH KIDS TO READ, deeply and critically, and then to set those kids free in the world to dive into the books THEY choose, not what your simple-minded adherence to custom dictates.
