Benchmark thread. :marseylain::marseylifting::marseykernelpanic:

Not rocket science post your benchmarks.

Ideally we'd have a "battlestation" :marseysoylentgrin: thread but I understand why people would be weird about it :marseyglow:

I used kcbench https://gitlab.com/knurd42/kcbench on Fedora 37 but I assume we have a lot of Windows (:marseysmoothbrain:) users so I don't give a frick.

500 DC to first three posters :marseywholesome:

disclaimer: I am drunk

Leaning towards this, haven't looked into the motherboard yet. Mostly went with a brand I recognized (though I usually buy Gigabyte)

Also had this build, but based on the Passmark score the processor is only 6% "better" for a 33% price increase (though it's also on AM5 and DDR5

I'm going to keep hemming and hawing until I impulsively buy something. I can afford a darn Threadripper if I really wanted, but I never treat myself and have to justify every little purchase I make. Yes the AM5 has increased future potential but as we saw, I'll hold onto a system well past it's use-by date.

Spent too much time researching if my old heatsink was forwards compatible. It's too darn tall anyway, actually damaged a motherboard because it was bending when I put the side cover on. Plus it blocked two of the DIMM slots. Heard good things about Noctua on the 3d printing subs

Also yeah, Noctua is incredible. Easily the best coolers on the market.

IMO going with AM4 isn’t a bad move if you’re saving cash. Gigabyte is what I go with as well.

Do note on the AM4 board requires a BIOS update to support Zen 3 CPUs. That can be a sticking point if they send you an old version. I’d stick with a B550 / X570 if you’re going with a Zen 3 chip anyway.

Fuggit. Thanks for all the advice, finally pulled the trigger. If I'm gonna attempt to emulate an xbox360 to play Red Dead, may as well get the newer tech

Can't believe it's been over a decade on this computer.

Lol that rules, hope you enjoy. That will murder the old CPU.

My advance is to update the BIOS asap (AM5 is getting a lot of patches), I don’t think you need to use EXPO for the RAM and def investigate whatever Power Boost Overdrive is for AM5 - should get a tad more perf with that class of cooler.

In the future I’d recommend picking up an NVMe M.2 drive, they getting super cheap and are blazing fast.
