Benchmark thread. :marseylain::marseylifting::marseykernelpanic:

Not rocket science post your benchmarks.

Ideally we'd have a "battlestation" :marseysoylentgrin: thread but I understand why people would be weird about it :marseyglow:

I used kcbench https://gitlab.com/knurd42/kcbench on Fedora 37 but I assume we have a lot of Windows (:marseysmoothbrain:) users so I don't give a frick.

I was positive I'd get those responses if I posted a "battlestation" or "wallpaper" thread but I wasn't fully expecting that for a benchmark thread.

Yeah I was looking at both but I live next to a Microcenter and they had a really good sale. I think I got the CPU for like $415 with the RAM free and the Mobo another $120. A lot of the socket AM5 mobos are really expensive for what you get.

With my version of GCC it krashes with errors like this one:

subcmd-util.h:56:23: error: pointer may be used after ‘realloc’ [-Werror=use-after-free]

It seems Linux 5.15 and new versions of GCC (12.2.1) don't play nice

Do you have PBO enabled? My 5700g is pretty similar and I get better results with PBO.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Ok, PBO was enabled to "AMD", I changed it to "motherboard" and set the PBO boost to "+20", whatever that means. I got slightly better results but my CPU now boost up to 4.825GHz instead of 4.850GHz and I noticed that it draws 120W maximum instead of ~125W like (I think? I don't remember for certain) it did previously. idk.

On the positive side now it idles at 550MHz like it should. Turns out I forgot to add the kernel parameter to grub's config after I bricked it and had to reset it :marseybigbrain:

I think so since I can boost up to 4.85GHz no problem, what is strange is that it is using acpi-cpufreq as the scaler, few months ago I set the computer to use amd_pstate (it allows the cpu to go to lower frequencies when idling). I'll try to figure out those two things and I'll re-do the benchmark. Also I should definitely have set the scaler to performance for the benchmark :marseybrainlet: as the conservative is a little "lazy" in ramping up the frequency

btw does your little 5700g outperform my 5800x? That would be worrying :marseyitsaover:

My brother suggested I buy an XBone because they're cheap enough on marketplace but I'd rather put that $200 towards finally upgrading this

I guess it depends if you are an epic g*mer, want to save a buck or are a nerdcel. Series S with Games Pass is a great deal. They even have a $25/mo program where you get a console with games pass https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-all-access

For a new PC you could probably find a used Zen2 rig at a decent price. Craigslist or /r/hardwareswap are my go-tos. I wouldn't recommend keeping the Phenom alive, you could find a used NUC that was faster.

Yeah, I just haven't been playing anything newer than Fallout 4 so never felt the need to upgrade. It'd probably help to upgrade when doing my 3d modeling, but it's also possible Fusion is just really inefficient and would be laggy on newer hardware, too.

I may have to soon enough to play Red Dead 2 though. Three years newer than FO4. Had I not just booked a cruise, I'd have disposable income available to research what current_year builds look like. It's been literally over a decade since I last built a PC so I don't know anything beyond "Ryzen is a thing". I really really don't need a super-high-end thing with RGB lights and water cooling and ahego vinyl wrap. I'm in my mid 30s, I'm fricking tired and want to grill and play a little vidya. I don't find 30fps to be "literally unplayable", I played through Bioshock Infinite on my laptop averaging 16fps

Yeah in no uncertain terms the cpu is dog slow. My Thinkpad from 2016 has a 15W CPU that is faster. If I’m not mistaken your GPU is bottlenecked by the CPU, heavily.

Basically what happened is Intel was resting on their laurels, AMD got serious and BTFOd them in a lot of aspects. Now they are both competitive and it’s worth re-assessing every six months because it changes so fast. Awesome time for CPUs.

I mean if you just want a chill gaming experience the Series S is really compelling especially for the price as I said before.

If you have a Steam library you don’t want to loose, but still want to grill, the Steam Deck is really cool . It technically runs Linux but most games play (for nerdshit reasons). You can dock it for a full desktop experience and it can also run Windows if you really want it to.

As far as traditional PCs go, any budget less than $500 I recommend buying used - as I posted before. You can pick up some deals at say, Microcenter, but it’s kind of pointless when you get way better bang for the buck used. While RGB aheago is a thing it’s decently easy to find a sleek, minimalist, box in $CURRENT_YEAR. In general the PC space has exploded in the last decade so all tastes are accounted for (for a price).

If you really do want to stick with a new desktop for under $500 it might be worth looking at “APUs”. APUs are AMDs CPUs with integrated GPUs which are decently performant. They’ll be slightly slower GPU perf than your current GPU but way less power, basically take up no space, and the CPU will murder your current rig (along with the benefits of DDR4, NVMe, etc.)

I'm kinda leaning towards just replacing the mb/cpu/ram. My GPU still seems competitive enough for my needs and the power supply (Corsair CX 500w) should handle newer stuff.

I'll reuse the old tower. Kept dragging my full ATX case to hotels while traveling for work, started asking why I'm so r-slurred given I need exactly 0 of the four 5¼ drive bays. Replaced it with a Cooler Master Q500L, fits a full ATX in miniATX form factor. 3d printed a carrying handle, too.

Lemme tell you, when I was put in the same wing of a hotel as a bachelorette party, I looked so cool carrying a computer and 3d printer into my room

new mobo/cpu/ram

Yeah in that case it should be easy enough to find. A nice thing with modern rigs is you can drop the 2.5 and use an NVMe drive so it’s even more compact.

Is shopping typically done through NewEgg still? I remember there was some drama about marketplace sellers flooding the store with overpriced garbage.

I'll keep an eye on my local Marketplace too, see if anyone is selling previous-gen Ryzen builds.

Yeah I think you’ll find the best deal with AM5, even used.

No I wouldn’t use NewEgg or TigerDirect they are bad.

Amazon is decent just make sure it’s Shipped And Sold By Amazon and it’s from the manufacturers official store.

Also see if you have a Microcenter nearby. They have in incredible deals and selection but are brick and mortar only. http://pcpartpicker.com/ Is very popular for making build lists and helps a ton with compatibility.

Yup anything like Craigslist or Marketplace is a great option.

Leaning towards this, haven't looked into the motherboard yet. Mostly went with a brand I recognized (though I usually buy Gigabyte)

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Y3h2sL

Also had this build, but based on the Passmark score the processor is only 6% "better" for a 33% price increase (though it's also on AM5 and DDR5

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wwKQW4

I'm going to keep hemming and hawing until I impulsively buy something. I can afford a darn Threadripper if I really wanted, but I never treat myself and have to justify every little purchase I make. Yes the AM5 has increased future potential but as we saw, I'll hold onto a system well past it's use-by date.

Spent too much time researching if my old heatsink was forwards compatible. It's too darn tall anyway, actually damaged a motherboard because it was bending when I put the side cover on. Plus it blocked two of the DIMM slots. Heard good things about Noctua on the 3d printing subs
