I just use matrix for family shit but can't say I've ever had much performance issues. Also always assumed Hodgson was a kraut. It's pretty impressive how quickly they've progressed and how well it it's been adopted as far as FOSS shit goes.

FOSS stuff always catches on quick when it's well designed and serves a unique use that nothing else can quite replicate. Such as pipewire, matrix, rust, and of course the Linux kernel. When it can't immediately justify it's existence to corporations or governments it fails to catch on, activitypub, Wayland, Ubuntu touch.

I disagree. ActivityPub caught on very fast in the space where it was wanted/needed and replaced many disparate protocols.

Wayland has a PulseAudio problem where people blame it for bugs that are actually on a lower stack - Wayland just exposed the buggy code. But even then I’ve used Wayland fine for years.

Ubuntu touch was a huge L for sure. The Linux phone dream is still in a rough place.

The problem is Wayland didn't fix things on the lower stack, instead trying to keep a "limited scope" when that ship has long sailed. See how long it took to release Weston, which by then was far too late.

Also I'm not saying these projects are bad, they aren't. Just that they will never be mainstream as they currently exist today. Ubuntu touch/UB Ports is unironically really nice and I actually like it more than android, it just couldn't justify why people should care about it beyond moral reasons.

? No, Wayland exposes bad drivers and they get fixed in the kernel.

I'm honestly surprised how shit the development of Wayland has been. You don't generally see hype like its had without a potential for profit.

The hype is mainly due to the fact X11 is dated and needs a replacement. The problem is Wayland does so in one of the worst ways possible and takes the wrong approach to solving real issues.

Meanwhile pipewire took the correct approach to fixing stuff and thus became mainstream much faster (and with way less friction).

It works great for me. And Samsung ships Wayland in a bunch of places.

Oh I definitely find it’s slow and janky but always getting better.

I mean they’ve been going since ~2015 which is still pretty quick for this sort of thing.
