Most of them were cool projects like Nuxt, dioxus, and mockoon. But one project stood out:
JessicaTegner/pypandoc Pypandoc provides a thin wrapper for pandoc, a universal document converter.
[0] https://github.com/JessicaTegner/pypandoc/commits/master
Why would this thin wrapper of another popular OSS project be selected when all the other projects are serious OSS projects with giant repos and thousands of stars?
Then someone noticed a commit:
Jessica's Github profile:
Various chuddery
Edit: forgive the repost, forgot to post it to /h/slackernews

Frankly this is just bizarre. There have to be thousands of trangenders with serious open source projects that could have been chosen. I wonder if this is some kind of nepotism thing instead.

Because it's just a fricking wrapper in Python around another actually good/famous open source project written in another language. That's not a serious project you can build an open source career around that needs guidance and capital.
It just stands out in the list of real projects so the fact it's a is what makes it funny.

That's like saying building bridges isn't real engineering. Yes, it's only a wrapper, but what does it enable that otherwise wouldn't take place due to the mental block of 'uh, that module's in another language.' Use your imagination.

I'm a programmer I understand the value of wrappers. Do you know what an accelerator is? This isn't just handing devs $20k charity so they have a bit more time to fix bugs... they are joining a 10 week program getting mentorship and meeting serious OSS devs who run major projects full time with teams, aka turning their small projects into something real like a startup accelerator.
https://accelerator.github.com/
The connections and training is worth way more than giving $20k to software engineers making $200k/yr. And a wrapper project is not a good target for that sort of thing, sorry. There's thousands of better projects suited for this.

They're giving the project training or connections? Or the individual behind the project?
Maybe someone sees something in them. I glanced at their linkedin and they're an intern at uber.
A monkey can churn out a 100kloc project that doesn't really fill a gap or add anything to the ecosystem but looks very impressive, a genius can write a 5kloc network card driver that solves a bug nobody else has been able to solve.
Sometimes this is about identifying and nurturing talent.

I've been through real startup incubators, I've also applied and interviewed multiple times, and I'm friends with angel investors so I've seen the sorts of people who can fake it past the screening with charisma but that's usually because they have a project that checks certain boxes (aka trendy markets) and they know how to play the game.
Otherwise 90% of the they almost always spot talent by what they've accomplished and not because they had a good interview.
It's possible they want to turn this into a real pandoc competitor but why would Github describe it as a "thin" layer around a boring market (pandoc style CLIs converting markdown files is not a particularly interesting category)?
This person is some low level Uber employee from Denmark with a marginally interesting github project that will never have more than one person running it part time... absent a major change. It's not surprising people are suspicious.
