New business opportunity in the near future to "reinvent" the wheel by offering subscription-free cars?
Lol. Mercedes can get fricked.
I was probably never going to buy a Merc EV, but now I never will. Same with any other EV that implements this sort of BS.
Pledge: I will not buy any car from any car manufacturer that engages in this practice.
They can do whatever they want. Idiots are the ones who buy it.
If no one buys their cars anymore, I am aure they have to change the tactics.
But no, people are stupid and companies get the cash.
Everybody's like, "I'll never buy an EV that implements these subscription practices".
The only way to be sure of this is to never buy an EV at all. If we let the government and auto industry kill off ICE cars, then one day when EVs are all you can buy, you'll have no choice but to hope all the manufacturers don't suddenly start launching subscription packages across the board, because you no longer have an alternate option. So glad to watch redditors realize how fricked they're gonna be after years of non-stop simping for EVs.

This problem is not unique to EVs. They are entirely capable of implementing pay to play features on ICE cars. It is not hard to detune a diesel remotely.

The only thing stopping Ford from doing it on every r-slur who bought an F150 is they didn't think of it first

Fear not, they've already laid the groundwork for it https://www.ford.com/support/category/fordpass/fordpass-electric-vehicle-features-overview/
Once people get used to the features, they'll start charging.

GM is dropping Android Auto/Carplay support from their EVs. (Despite many models gaining a brand new Android-based infotainment in 2022)

Like as-is, i pretty much have to pay the $15/month for unlimited data in my work truck. Google Maps is always active and it will give you warnings about "offline map data needed", even if you aren't navigating and already downloaded offline maps on your home wifi.
Every single time you start the truck, it tries to update your offline maps from scratch. If you drive away from your home wifi before it's done, it yells at you. The only way to keep it from alerting you is either idle in your driveway for 10 minutes every morning, or pay for data.
Theoretically you could download offline maps and delete your wifi to keep it from trying to update, but then you have to re-add it every 30 days when the maps expire.
In my specific case it works out anyway -- Verizon signal is godawful at work, OnStar uses AT&T so it's worth it for the hour+ I spend every day shitposting. Nice truck, godawful Android implementation.

Electric infra just won't be possible in a lot of places, petrol cars will always exist. But richer economic areas switching would reduce economy of scale and increase unit costs significantly, probably. Its technically good for us cause all our petrol is imported so reducing that is imperative but I doubt electric ones will ever be as free as petrol ones are. I was watching a documentary recently where there was this chink foid who drove from shanghai to tibet in her tiny citycuck car, no way stuff like that happens with electric cars.

We'll be able to teleport beam charge cars from another continent that won't be a problem, the reason petrol cars will always exist is because you can't huff electricity.

The EV isn't the problem, it's the manufacturers treating them like "car, reinvented" to change how comfort options work. They could just as easily do this stuff in an ICE.
It shouldn't be surprising for a "premium" manufacturer to engage in this behavior. No different than luxury hotels charging for WiFi -- the clients have deep wallets (or company expense) so why not charge for something they'll pay for anyway?

I doubt Tesla would engage in this sorta crap. Self driving is different as they constantly need to research and update the software, so a service makes more sense there.
