My mom (@UserWithoutACause) got into http://ancestry.com and accidentally found out her nana was a cheating whore and that most of her grandmas kids (and by tangent us included) are actually related to some guy who lived in the same apartment building or something in like the 1930's.

She promised she would do a good effortpost on it some day because the whole story is pretty funny

The rDrama API charges are way too high to download even some of the comments. Us hole owners are planning a blackout in protest.

The fee is very reasonable, Aevann needs to pay for the server's hosting, carp's salary and benefits and to fund his next solid gold pyramid.

It literally was after the OG crackers used public info to impersonate people and infiltrate stuff. We just said "Never put your real name on the internet!" and "Be very mindful of nicknames/e-mails when signing up for stuff!" And then Facebook happened.

yeah that changes it. because kids in the west roughly got accessible broadband the latter half of 90's, while undersea cables were just being laid in asia for the finance people. resulting in super rich kids having access instead of nerds. sorry to hear it took that long for opsec ideas to reach you, glad to have you on this side of culture.

How's about a look up table of the guaranteed best move to make in chess, when there are 7 pieces or less? That comes in at 18.4TB.

How large is the tablebase?

The number of unique legal 7-piece positions is 423,836,835,667,331. Syzygy tablebases store all their information in 18.4 TB, so at around 0.35 bits per position. This is much more compact than the proprietary 100 TB Lomonosov tablebases.

I am planning to run FreeBSD with zfs compression enabled so I can fit even more data, I heard deduplication is a scam so idk whether to enable that too

i also heard a rumor that zfs doesn't do the needful if you fill it up all the way, idk if there is a better file system to use, I want to maxxximize my data hoarding

I've never used zfs but I used btrfs for a while and that was annoyingly overengineered to the point that I just switched back to ext4. I guess you could use something like gluster if they're gonna be on different machines but tbh any filesystem that doesn't keep it simple is pretty ghey

Jump in the discussion.

yes zfs is gods gift to man.

FreeBSD is fine but Ubuntu has native zfs support as well and you get docker.

Try not to reach over 80% usage, but that’s a rule of thumb.

Never use dedup on zfs unless you really really know what you’re doing. Consider it broken.

These two books are the zfs bibles and amazing (although slightly outdated and written for FreeBSD) https://files.catbox.moe/avs22g.zip

zstd is the modern compression algorithm, but just keep in mind it’s not magic and things already compressed (video, audio) it will have no effect, any text will see a great improvement.

is a good price tracker and aggregator for Amazon products too.

That website with its $4 per TB shows prices for when you buy in huge bulks. Good for datacenter shoppers but not so much for retail.

For eBay, I search for "3 TB HDD" and filter for new and sales completed excluding auctions, and a simple scroll and napkin math will you get the average.

Yeah I've used that site before, but it only shows Amazon it doesn't crawl eBay. 4.375 per tb vs Amazon being $6.63 makes sense, Amazon used shit usually has a markup over ebay

If you bought a bulk pack, then they're most likely old server hard drives. A quick SMART test will give you a basic view of each HDDs health, but the long test (1-2 hours per HDD) would be best.

I'd save yourself the time, and chuck each one that has "too many reds" (bad things) from the quick SMART test.

Linux has a built in HDD scanner for SMART assessment, but you'd need to look up the commands.

If you want to run a zfs array, each HDD needs to be the same size per array.

Jump in the discussion.

would you actually suggest getting used ones if the data you're storing isn't very important? i am finally happy with my media setup now but i don't have much storage, where i live prices are 3x what schizo was talking about :marseypoor:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Sure, after running each one through a long SMART test and expecting to replace 1 or 2 over the next year or three, but I'd also use zfs. Microsoft's RAID 6 ain't bad either.

Disk drives are pretty durable, and the effort can be worth the cost savings.

More comments

there's no way you bought 80TB of legit hard drives for $350, even used

brand new that would be like $2-3000

unless it's like a shitload of otherwise worthless 250GB drives or something

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

They're used drives from 2013 lol hence being so cheap

I only have like a few tb of actually needful schizodata so idc if I lose it all eventually

Also bought a poweredge r420 for $11 ( +88 dollar shipping ), I bid on it because 420 haha weed number and didn't expect to win the auction but then I did

Also just looked at eBay and saw I also purchased 10x 128gb ssds and 128gb of ddr3 ram (presumably to go with my poweredge r420), must have blacked out cuz I have no memory of that

movies and television can take a lot of space if it's remuxes or high quality encodes. But first priority with sketchy drives should be to set up a resilient raid configuration such as raidz2 groups (let's say ~8 disks per vdev. I assume you have this in the form of a ton of 2tb or so drives if it's from 2013.) or mirroring.
