I've liked the shift in narrative where Google (and other FAANGS) were highly analytical and did things due to specific reason and now that RTO is being pushed it's because they're deranged power hungry lunatics who are worried about the value of office space.

who are worried about the value of office space.

God this is my favorite cope, yeah the boss wants you to be in your office so the value of that office stays slightly higher than before. Fricking goons.

So you really think the return to office push is entirely unrelated to massive commercial real estate vacancies?

Nope I think it's because most jobs require collaboration and WFH is garbage for that.

Most jobs yes, but Google actually owns an insane amount of real estate in San Jose and its surrounding cities and a lot of them are sitting empty or have a skeleton crew of contractors sitting at unmarked Google black sites.

There was little collaboration at Google in the first place, since Googlers can easily frick off to a different project at will, and teams are always poaching from each other in the quad. If anything, I'd argue that being WFH actually increases Googles productivity because it would cut down a lot of the bullshit associated with working at Googs.

Yes, my productivity has skyrocketed during WFH, all activity metrics are up across the company. For a lot of people zoom calls and/or teams made collaboration easier, no need to book a room, speak in person and so on

Google is a $1.6 trillion company with quarterly net income of $18 billion. The value of their office space holdings is pretty low on the list of things that matter to them.

Where would they rank in relation to staples?

And what about the board members who are pressured by interlocking directorates with real estate companies??

Just glancing at the board, half of them are founding member who probably have hundreds of millions if not billions in google shares. The closest one to someone who might care about commercial real estate is someone who used to work at Goldman Sachs.
