Some of them are, yes. They booted a few mods from subs, which is kind of like being fired and replaced by a new mod. Which leads to the question - if you can be fired and replaced by someone new, was that new person hired?

Whether this union thing works and reddit ends up having to pay through the nose, or it fails with much crying, it'll be fun to watch.

Basically Reddit is providing a platform and is hands off with moderation - that's all done by volunteers. Because the mods aren't paid, they have some protection from liability for copyright. If mods are suddenly employees, they lose that protection.
