Under US labor laws unpaid volunteers don't have the right to unionize.

volunteers

What are they gonna do? Get booted?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Some of them are, yes. They booted a few mods from subs, which is kind of like being fired and replaced by a new mod. Which leads to the question - if you can be fired and replaced by someone new, was that new person hired?

Whether this union thing works and reddit ends up having to pay through the nose, or it fails with much crying, it'll be fun to watch.

Umm sure. And maybe as a user if I get banned for posting a bunch of slurs then I'm getting fired too I guess. Where's my paycheck?

If Reddit thinks they will have to pay a dollar to a janny, they will fire them all and relocate the jobs to India.

And they should!

Then they'd lose their safe harbour status and REALLY be in the shit.

Basically Reddit is providing a platform and is hands off with moderation - that's all done by volunteers. Because the mods aren't paid, they have some protection from liability for copyright. If mods are suddenly employees, they lose that protection.

I love that they are coordinating and collaborating on the platform they despise and are (actively?) boycotting. Cuz it's really smart to talk about how you're going to harass advertisers on Reddit's own platform and then surprise pikachu when admins wake up in a couple of hours and just get rid of you.

ive pushed a mop elsewhere before and the admiggers were completely hands off and let you mod. It was a good time while it lasted. I would have just quit if the admiggers took away my fun. then i just found other cool communities I didn't need to mop up after myself when everyone eventually moved on.

even if you make the argument that they won't put down the mop and give up power, it just makes the mods look more pathetic. Some of these subs have massive numbers of subscribers. They could easily make their own patriots.win copy and be more reddit than reddit is somewhere else. The codependency on reddit is unreal

"Under US labor laws" - Reddit mods exist from around the world. I'm in Iceland. There are other jurisdictions out there. I suspect that only about half of Reddit mods are from the US.

Have fun trying to enforce your island's laws on a legal entity based and hosted in a different country, r-slur.

IDK what the frick makes Europeans like this.

Reddit made a mistake in ignoring its core users

Quite the opposite. It's in fact the very, very small minority who are loudly proclaiming the site would be lost without them. That's false.

And getting that very simple observation wrong makes me dislike the "protestors" all the more.

I copied this from a /technology thread a couple weeks ago:

The changes they're making are pushing things in the direction they want them to go, not you. Reddit doesn't want to be a website where a bunch of nerds have long conversations about esoteric topics like history/psychology/geopolitics/whatever, or discuss obscure nerd shit like how to replace the drive belt on a 1982 TEAC V-95RX cassette deck. Reddit wants to be an app that people download from the app store, and click the arrows on the funny memes, and eat all the ads, and generate monetizable data for their business customers.

All of the old reddit users are upset because Reddit Corp. is steadily pushing things away from what made reddit popular to begin with. REDDIT KNOWS THIS. It's intentional. Reddit is not (anymore) supposed to be a minimal text-based website where people discuss topics. It's supposed to be a modern content delivery app where people look at pictures and watch videos and generate data that can be sold to third parties.

If anything, reddit actively wants all of the "old guard" users, the 10-15+ year old accounts, to give up and leave. The people who b-word about the unskippable JESUS LOVES YOU ads, the people who use old.reddit and all kinds of custom scripts/tools, the bot developers, moderators, spam fighters, desktop PC users, etc. This is not a "website" anymore, it's an APP. Pretty much every action they've taken over the past 5+ years has made that clear. It is disappointing for people who have been here a long time, but reddit is not going to change direction. The old users (including me) are just having a hard time accepting that after devoting so much time to it.
