Dying industry that can't afford to write new software, make sense.

They realized that they don't need to fully refactor/rewrite a working product every 5 years for 5% more features.

Yes, but it also means they're super dependent on three pieces of software now: the original application, the emulator, and the OS running the emulator. That's a lot of surface area for problems. The moral of the story is: that's Corp IT's problem, don't work in IT.

People are allergic to the idea of updating their systems because of cost/stability. Better to just do this to keep everything running like how it has been.

:marseyxd: I love these instances of commercial processes that hinge entirely on an abandoned or obsolete piece of hardware/software.

There's a whole sub-industry of industrial controls keeping legacy hardware running. Really more of an "ain't broke don't fix it" situation especially when there aren't any returns or meaningful efficiency gains to be had from replacing old PLCs that have run with zero problems for 30 years with some new IoT-enabled bullshit.

Like that obscure fork of IBM OS/2 which still receives patches made by some third party

I remember palm OS. Instead of an iPad I got a Palm OS tablet :marseyfacepalm:

The hardware was good but I eneded up replacing the OS with Lineage because Palm OS had no apps

Do you mean the weird webOS tablets people loved because they were practically giving them away?
