So instead of 1 big reddit Lemmy is just a ton of small reddits linked together except they all block eachother? :marseyconfused:

Lemmy is what would happen to reddit if you gave mods the right to wall themselves off from other subreddits, i.e. you don't just get banned from /r/X for posting in /r/Y, you can't even use the same account to visit both.

To be fair, I don't think Lemmy was built explicitly as a reddit alternative, but it's hilarious that they did not see this coming (or worse, that they thought it was a feature). As it is, Lemmy is basically nothing more than a forum template.

Yes, just like how Mastodon is a ton of small twitters linked together except they all block eachother.

There are a few small instances that defederate from nobody, and even the lemmy and mastodon instances federate with each other. It's like email but with social media.

It's actually pretty great tech. People can just self host if they want to federate with everyone free of janny fiefdom.

tbh that's what I did but it's so fricking janky. Comments don't fully populate, votes don't either, even submissions don't fully populate. I'm pretty sure it wasn't always like that but something about the updates they had to push I think messed with the sync. Haven't checked in like a month tho, maybe they fixed it in >18.2

Neat.

I wish I knew more about activity pub to build a skeleton prototype but idk jack shit about whatever the doc for it was talking about

An actual reddit-base (like rdrama) with extra-server communication capability would be cool to see, the lemmy UI is just weird.

Nested-reply image boards ftw.
