This was a plot point in the decent TV show Silicon Valley. However the tabs person used the tab key and the space person hit their space bar individually :marseyfacepalm:

I think trying to explain to writers “no there's no functional difference on the programmers end it's purely an encoding difference” was too neurodivergent for them.

they did it because the joke wouldn't land to non-techcels if they didn't

I have yet to see a single codebase, ever, use tabs correctly. That is, use tabs for indentation, and spaces for alignment, so that the tab width can be modified without fucking up the vertical alignment on shit.

I also have not seen a single IDE - not VS, not IntelliJ - handle them correctly either. They always assume something like "tabs = 4 spaces so every time you see 4 spaces just turn it into a tab". Then you look at the diff with git diff or something and nothing lines up properly because the tools use tabsize=8.

oh but tempest: just set your tools to use tabsize=4! yeah well the whole point of tabs in the first place is to let users/tools use whatever size they deem necessary, if it looks bad with tabsize=2, tabsize=4, or tabsize=8, then you've fucked up your use of tabs.

anyways yeah death to all tabcels
