Which decade of "liberal ideology" are we talking about? That left-right dichotomy doesn't hold up consistently over time, so it can be hard to pinpoint.
You've got a lot of well-intended yet dogmatic people who want to do good. Phrases like social justice, power to the people, and helping the needy have their socialist roots because frick the market
and frick the mutual aid society 
. Democrats also lean heavily toward such sentiments, and some time during the 70s and 80s postmodern thought started leaking out of the cesspit of academia and into "liberal" / Democratic thought, increasingly over the years.
I think after the 90s when the soviet union fell, the socialists in academia really had nothing useful to say, so they turned more toward cultural issues. There's a lot of overlap between Democrats and these types of r-slurs, so
