I went to a lecture on that in college. Basically it's true as far as it keeps the script kiddies out, but knowledgeable actors often have an easier time gaining access to obscure systems simply because they are less tested.

The problem is that you have no way to verify what may or may not have been done by malicious actors using compromised keys in the meantime.

Entirely unironically yes. Any company rich enough to have its own, on-prem infrastructure should. Cloudshit is for poors and r-slurs.

Any company rich enough to have its own, on-prem infrastructure should. Cloudshit is for poors and r-slurs.

Clearly you're not a C level exec. My company is forcing a complete migration off prem to the public cloud over the next two years. The answer of "It's the cloud" when pushed for the actual benefits is delivered with the same energy crypto bros use when saying "blockchain is the future" when asked why anyone should buy in to their half baked ideas.

So far it's only costing us more, with worse performance, and providing substandard RPO in case of disaster. I've been on some spicy calls with the business units about that last one.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

My favorite part of our r-slurred cloud push is: when they got their first bill after sending like 10% of the company to do shit there they told us to stop using it so much as it was too expensive. But we are still going to push to cloud and killing on-prem machines off.

:#marseycontemplatesuicide:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Lmao they see the introductory and think that's lifetime model. The minute you spend 500k switching shit over they will hike it just high enough for you not to leave

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Public cloud is more expensive with the justification hiring will be easier and cheaper. On boarding new people how you set up your specific setup will be harder than looking for someone who has aws/gcp/azure experience.

I think it makes sense for large companies. Smaller to medium then it depends more

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Eh, it removes a layer of complexity but it's not like anyone who knows Azure/AWS/whatever can just pop in and start working either.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Im not very aware of how the onprem world is, but I'm assuming infrastructure-as-code doesn't really exist.

Things like aws cdk let you write typescript to provision and set everyone thing up. So if you stick to using it (and dont manually provision things on the web ui) then you can go from 0 to productive just reading the cdk repo. It's pretty readable stuff unlike mountains of yaml templates

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Its pretty neat. Everything is great until you've got an architect who wants a billion stacks, but then they all depend on eachother, defeating the purpose of modularizing the project into different stacks.

Hi friends, ER doc here.

You and your family should really think about masking up this holiday season.

If you don't, here is what is currently store for you:

  • completely backed up urgent care centers

  • Emergency Departments with 6 hour wait times

  • Pediatric Emergency Departments with 9 hour wait times

  • 72 hour boarding times in the Emergency department for patients admitted to the hospital. And no, I can't make a call and get your loved one upstairs faster, I've been haggling with bed control all day and they can't do shit.

  • if you are admitted, a strong chance you are going to a “hallway room”, meaning a bed that is in a hallway

  • if you scream at myself or my team to try to get things done faster we will probably just scream at you back at this point. Do you realize everyone is screaming at us about the conditions in the hospital? Literally every patient? The exception is family visitors—there is no debate, no discussion: if you scream at us at this point I am just having hospital security remove you

  • your kid need high flow nasal cannula for their acute respiratory distress for their bronchiolitis? I'm working on it as best as I can but…well there is no easy way to tell you this…but we are kinda running low on those things. And RT is helping intubate a 4th kid this morning in the PICU so they aren't showing for a while anyway

You and your family should really think about wearing a mask this holiday season.

Government should just build its own cloud instead of relying on Microsoft at this point tbh. Sensitive info from the govt shouldn't even be in the same data center that regular cloud hardware used by the public is in.
