Tech Workers Paying $700 a Month for Tiny Bed 'Pods' in SF

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37732026

Imagine bringing back a man or woman back to your “pod”. No privacy. Just shag and hope the other mates don't wake up or kill the vibe.

What women

:marseysmug2:

I spent a decade traveling Europe in hostels and visiting clients. There's nothing inherently wrong with a pod itself. Indeed, I prefer it if it means you get expansive public space.

Later, I lived in a New York building which was originally to become a we-work, with great amenities. It's not like you spend much time in bed. Indeed, many people (in cities) go to cafes etc. to work.

That's an interesting take that seems so obvious now that you've said it. I've spent my whole life in single family homes and never quite "got" the "go work in a cafe" and similar stuff. Seems like a pretty rich tapestry of possible experiences to miss out on. Huh. Will be chewing on that for a while.

Yea listening to people order coffee and talk loudly while you try to work is a "rich tapestry of possible experiences" :marseycoffee:

@PeepeeButtKiss don't believe this article is real. No one in America but the biggest r-slurs or some FOB chinee person would ever live like this. The whole article reads like bait but more likely is a giant ad by SFGate the company that put this bullshit together. If you look at the pictures its like 6 steel boxes built on each other in a giant space that looks like some nice loft apartment. The least realistic use of that space is they did here they might as well have filled an apartment with shipping containers

Pods are awesome. They're just small hotel rooms, or college dorms. If I'm gonna be out all day every day, I don't need a spacious living room. And when I'm in, I'm just sitting on a chair using my laptop.

welcome to uni, r-slur. did you not get laid in college? of course you didn't.

They only work for some styles of living. Which is fine! You can buy a bigger apartment or a suburban house if you want. But it should be legal to make pod-apartments, and it currently isn't because crakkkas hated blackpipo and wanted to ban slums without seeming racist.

My college “dorm” was 1300 square feet and I didn't have to share it with anyone.

My university :marseygrad: doesnt have a dorm since its older than the US and 90% of the attendees were locals anyway so students have to find living :marseyzombie2: space :marseyspock: themselves and only half end up living :marseyzombie2: in shared apartments. Im happy :marseyitsoverwerebackyall: with no sharing a kitchen :marseyrefrigerator: or bathroom with other people if only that no one complains about me making chicken :marseykfc: at 2am.

good for you! you should be able to do that. that's no reason to make pod apartments illegal via zoning and building codes, which they are in most places.

I'm all for deregulating housing but I also won't stop laughing about SFcels paying $500-900 to rent a box with a bed.

$900 isn't really cheaper than getting housemates and having more space. But the spergs that would rent a pod probably aren't social enough to find housemates.

I don't understand why people don't just work remote.

If it's impossible to live there in a reasonable way....just don't live there.

In SF? $700 is a good price, that's $23 per night.

I doubt there's a youth hostel in a 200 mile radius around san francisco with beds this cheap, and they have less privacy than those pods. Never mind a hotel room or airbnb.

If you stay longer than three months a shared apartment might be a better deal.

Everyone hating on SF has no grasp of how ridiculously overpaid techcels are.

They should automatically be charged for a second pod if they bring a woman back. "No subletting"

Pods have the same issues as hostels. You're surrounded by poors and have no privacy, so your stuff will be stolen while you sleep (if you even can, guaranteed someone within 30 feet of you will be a snoring apneacel or some dipshit scrolling through tiktoks at full volume until 4am)

>Capsule hotels in Japan are very similar, but they rent nightly as other hotels do. The capsules typically have a shade that acts as a non-locking door, which means there is privacy but not sound isolation. Each floor has keys, so not just anyone can wander in and look at your stuff while you're out. Most offer female-only floors. Some have capsules big enough to store a suitcase under the bed. Others have lockers on a separate floor.

>Some places have gym-style showers, or even common bath areas. Some have showers with locking doors, and the facilities can be nicer than many regular hotel bathrooms.

>In the places I've stayed, the common areas were universally excellent. Comfy couches and tables for working; cozy nooks for reading; ample kitchens; console video-game libraries. One place had round-the-clock curry and rice in the kitchen, and if you've had Japanese curry you know what a treat that is.

>If you're in the right mindset, staying in a capsule hotel in Japan can be a great experience. But bring earplugs; you can be sure that someone on your floor snores

I hate weebs so much

Probably worth it if it gets you a tech job in SF tbh. Work for five years, bank up a million five and frick off back to the old country to set up your harem.

It's a solid life plan.
