Why it matters: Website business models that depended on clicks from social media are now broken.

What's happening: Regulatory pressure and free speech concerns have pushed tech giants to abandon efforts to elevate quality information

So these tech giants were artificially boosting the profits of a small number major media companies just for no reason whatsoever? :mariothinking:

Efforts to reach voters with trusted information are becoming more difficult as tech platforms lean into viral trends, instead of quality news.

:#marseycope: more like it wasn't quality news

Did you know Pulitzer, named for the highest award of prestige an American Journ*list could get, was the guy who fricking invented "Yellow Journ*lism?" or "Making shit up in your headlines to drive sales?"

I thought that was fascinating!

You had two choices really, links that led to (genuine) misinformation or links that led to paywalls

Hard to blame X/FB for declining to serve up either

The over-reliance on social media traffic kept news publishers from focusing on building stronger consumer products of their own.

Who the frick even gets news off social media.

Maybe like viral tweeting or boomer Facebook, but prob most people get it from Google.

They won't say shit about making Google pay up, though.

Google has a button for news.

It will also give you local news based on your accounts location.

That's like saying 4chan or kiwifarms is a social media site. rdrama is more of a forum with a reddit-like interface than a social media site.

I think the problem the quote I was quoting is saying is that people don't have a "relationship" with their news source and are at the mercy of some third party (Meta, Google, Apple, X, etc) feeding their article to the masses.

So you will have 1 news event being covered by NYT, WaPo, AP, Reuters, CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews, NewsMax, some local station, NPR, Pornhub, BBC, etc and now how do you get it so the plebs will read your story over others if no-one really cared before where they got it and now a major disturber is pulling back on pushing your shit?

I don't know what they mean by product cause there are only so many ways to show text, video, and pictures so I can only assume they mean their "news" and those are all so indifferent from each other outside of wingcucking and opinionated news. :marseyshrug:

This sub is what happens when minimally educated unintelligent people join together to find common ground and project their own self loathing to the rest of the world. There has never been anything clever that I have ever seen from this sub. I will continue to look for humor but I am just starting to think that loss and anger plus unemployment equals humor
