Bongistan "Online Safety Bill" comes into effect

https://old.reddit.com/r/unitedkingdom/comments/17gw9v2/the_uks_controversial_online_safety_bill_finally

This legislation allows regulators to demand that encrypted platforms like WhatsApp and Signal implement backdoors to scan for CP. Redditors aren't happy about that, naturally.

More importantly, platforms will also need to show they are committed to removing content promoting or facilitating suicide or self-harm.

I'll miss you guys :marseybonggenocide:

Let's see how many messaging apps that promised to pull out are actually gonna do it :marseysmug3:

I think they'd just have to.

Part of the disagreement with lawmakers is they think you can have an "encryption backdoor" that only the """good guys""" can use. That's simply not how End-to-End Encryption works for Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram Secret Messages, etc.

This is equivalent to that guy passing a law mandating Pi was to be measured a poor way https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Pi_Bill

Many, many messaging apps are not E2E encrypted.

I guess it's an easy way to tell if an app developer is lying. If they claim to support E2E but continue doing business in the UK after this then they're clearly full of shit.

Which in particular? Groomercord and SMS comes to mind but a lot of the big ones now are either explicitly E2E (iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal) or support it in some way (Telegram, Matrix/Element).

Teams and Slack are clearly big and not encrypted but they're clearly business focused.

I suppose I was mostly thinking of Groomercord and Messenger (Facebook/Meta).

I'm actually surprised iMessage does it. Wouldn't that imply that if you buy a new MBP or something, when you go to look at your messages, you can only see new messages sent after you set it up?

"End to End Encrypted" *

*keys are stored in The Cloud(tm)

They have an option to store them on device iirc, at which point it works as you say

Jump in the discussion.

Ah, interesting. I assume storing the keys in iCloud (which would completely defeat the purpose of E2E) is the default? I wonder what percentage of users even opt to store them on the device. I'd bet under 5%, maybe even under 1%.

I don't believe this is true, you don't need to enable a feature.

Each item that's synced is encrypted so that it can be decrypted only by a device within the user's circle of trust; it can't be decrypted by any other devices or by Apple.

There was controversy over backups being encrypted by Apple but that can be disabled by enabling a feature as you suggested. https://support.apple.com/guide/security/advanced-data-protection-for-icloud-sec973254c5f/web

They do a robust key syncing over iCloud. https://support.apple.com/guide/security/secure-keychain-syncing-sec0a319b35f/web

Previously your iCloud backups were encrypted by Apple (for support purposes) but you can choose to opt out of that now. https://support.apple.com/guide/security/advanced-data-protection-for-icloud-sec973254c5f/web

They don't "have to" do anything. They'll just stop being E2E.

And not take an opportunity to grandstand?

Grandstand to who? The people who share your outlook on privacy are a tiny irrelevant minority.

If I had a penny every time I have to remind dramatards and techcels of this.... Normies exist and outnumber you 100:1.

Apple alone has been pushing a privacy and security angle for advertising for years now.

They are happy to use the opportunity to withdrawal services from the UK if it means they can flaunt their principles. https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/27/23775356/apple-online-safety-bill-statement-encrypted-messaging-apps-e2ee-end-to-end

Normies buy Apple because peer pressure and shiny :soyjakfront: not because they give a shit about privacy. Apple literally just released a new $1000 phone that's exactly the same as the previous, except it's titanium!! :soyjakfront: :soyjakfront:

Come the f on, read the market.

Bet lmao. Delusional.

How many normies have you talked with? Plenty of people I've spoken to don't like the creepy shit going on with big tech - especially once they have children.

I can see you have a dim view of other people but being cynical isn't synonymous with being correct.

Apple literally just released a new $1000 phone that's exactly the same as the previous, except it's titanium!

That's how a mature market works. Do you think they stop making fridges until there's some breakthrough in fridge technology?

No, everyone buys a fridge on their own cycle - just like phones in 2023.

Delusional

They told the FBI to F off when it came to breaking the encryption of iPhone devices. That's the US government too, not some has been country.

You're a highly neurodivergent dramatard, even by rdrama standards. Not a single person you talk to is a normie. You severely underestimate how dumb "average" is.

"Privacy" mentioned once in small font lmao. Your claim would hold more weight if Apple actually put Privacy front and center as a selling point in their marketing material.

They told the FBI to F off when it came to breaking the encryption of iPhone devices. That's the US government too, not some has been country.

There was no cost to doing so. You think the U.S. is going to stop a trillion dollar U.S. company from doing business, just because some r-slurred pigs made some r-slurred requests?

I think WhatsApp will backdoor their app, they're not all that principled about E2EE. Signal might actually pull out though.

I mean WhatsApp spent a good bit of effort adding the Signal protocol, they even added it to Facebook Messenger I believe.

WhatsApp is the app that demands full access to your contacts before you can message anyone, right?

Completely trustworthy.

I'm not one to trust FB but I do think them grandstanding has more value than sabotaging not only goodwill from their E2E efforts but actual code they've written.

We're talking about Bongland here too, not even the EU.

Seriously, what possible technical limitation could there be in requiring access to all my contacts?

Try it on a phone where you haven't installed WhatsApp. Try to send out a message to someone without letting FB r*pe your friends list.
