Can any of you linuxchads help me out :marseybegging:

Videos and pretty much anything to do with graphics is lagging the system. Idk much about hardware but I assume this is something to do with graphics card driver?

So I am trying to get set up with desktop env and all my experience with linux has been like half a year on terminal thru ssh.

I was able to install Debian 12 by partitioning like 30 or 40 gigs of space on my HP / intel laptop.

So the monitor, mouse, and keyboard worked on initial boot without me having to do anything so this was nice. But from what I have read intel drivers should already come with the default debian install.

Obviously I don't have this issue when booting to windows so I'm hoping it's just a driver issue.

Debian doesn't have nice drivers. Install Ubuntu

Try using phind.com to solve this. He'll give you the exact commands to paste. He's pretty good at Linux problems

You gotta know which window manager (aka desktop environment) you're using. There are a hundred out there.

If you're using Gnome (which I think is default on Debian?), look in the graphics settings for something that allows you to choose between 'Wayland' or 'X11' (the latter may be called 'Xorg' or 'X'; i'm not sure). Make sure Wayland is selected, and restart your machine.

I don't want to overload you with information but there are two broad technologies that Linux uses for displaying graphics: Wayland and X11. And Wayland is more suited for desktop computers in the 21st century. X11 is kinda old-fashioned, doesn't necessarily work out-of-the-box, and is harder to configure. Meanwhile, Wayland on an Intel GPU is pretty bulletproof.

That's my first guess as to what's going on.

I am using KDE Plasma as my desktop env

e: debian help page just tells me to remove the intel driver and use the built in one, so I did & restarted. Already seems to be faster as a bunch of tabs isn't lagging at all anymore and animations stopped lagging.

btw a lot of people also really dislike wayland. It's one of those nerd conflicts (and imo X is old but functions perfectly well)

I love Wayland but with some very old hardware or one off GPUs (like a weird embeded graphics chip on a server mobo) it can have issues like this. For most setups Wayland is working perfectly fine by now.

Just checked, it's wayland. I don't recall configuring this at all, all I did was select KDE Plasma when I first installed the OS.

After I removed the intel graphics driver and let it just use the one that comes with the OS everything got much better, so looks like I'm good to go.

It's so stupid fast lmao. Giga+ that on Win I had to jump thru a million hoops to throttle my internet (I use phone hotspot and letting it go full speed would eat the data in a day or less).

While on here a guy already made a dl/ul script called wondershaper in 2005 and I just tell it the kbs I want it set to and that's my internet speed now.

Total Windows death.

whats ur graphics hardware, driver, and whats your desktop environment

intel stuff has firmware you might need to load

i got a 12th gen intel and I had to add to add a kernel option to stop screen flickering and make it work properly

This is why it will never be the year of linux on the desktop, ever.

You should not be installing Debian as a new user, that's like installing Windows Server right out of the gate. New users should be using Linux Mint or a Ubuntu spin.

kind of an odd position in my case

I'm "new" in the sense that I'm somewhat new to linux, but I'm not new in the sense that I'm not a filthy casual (..relatively..)

debian is the only distro that makes sense to me and I've been breaking n learning on debian throwaway servers for like the past year

it's been a big butt headache for me to learn how to force windows to be stable and I'm not trying to install a distro that randomly just changes shit (wasn't there a huge set of people pissed off about ubuntu using snap then changing their mind or some shit)

That's why I usually suggest Mint, it changes but never super drastically. Also Mint has a debian edition that I've heard is really good.

Debian is really stable, but kinda infamous for being a real pain to initially setup.

meh, turned out I didn't even need to download anything (instead of installing a driver I had to actually just remove the driver intel had given them).

Terminal-wise I have been extremely happy with debian and now that my graphics card can be used normally I don't have any more lag, it's for me the perfect operating system

e: come to think of it, Mint was the distro I was suggested by a coworker when I first asked them about linux. I'm sure it's great but if it ain't broke..

Yeah if Debian is working for you, no need to change it. They are going to be functionally very similar after setup anyways.

plot twist windows server is basically just windows and will work on every box, right out of the box LOL

Is it? I haven't used it in years, the lack of a Windows store probably confuses Zoomers.
