:marseyhappening: Satya Nadella just announced that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman will be joining Microsoft to lead a new AI research team :marseyhappening:

https://twitter.com/satyanadella/status/1726509045803336122

We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI's new leadership team and working with them. And we're extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.

Confirmed to be a separate subsidiary entity https://twitter.com/satyanadella/status/1726516824597258569

I'm super excited to have you join as CEO of this new group, Sam, setting a new pace for innovation. We've learned a lot over the years about how to give founders and innovators space to build independent identities and cultures within Microsoft, including GitHub, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn, and I'm looking forward to having you do the same.

It's a good thing for Microsoft. They now have direct control over the brain trust of OpenAI.

MSFT is going to be interesting today. It's already up 2.30% in premarket.

This isn't the brains trust tho, the brains is a squillion ideologically driven rationalist nerds obsessed with making a machine god, who Sam explicitly repudiated.

Also acquisitions never work lol you get hired to Redmond and you stop doing anything even if you try to work

>who Sam explicitly repudiated

and as I understand it there will now be no sam..?

It isn't even some weird notion of creating a God it's also bamboozling gen pop to feed it while convincing gen pop that it's gonna be something positive.

Idk your feelings on that but that's my view and I am not getting any less apathetic for our future (and if that comes off as dramatic well that's a good thing)

I was referring to quote from last week where Sam said LLM wouldn't make AGI but would make fat stacks in the meantime:

Sam at Microsoft now will probably just focus on those fat stacks, which is good for shareholder return.

OpenAI's is sort of huffing their own farts, and the board clearly believed this shit enough to throw the whole company into disarray. But you're right that in practice they wouldn't make a machine god and would just con genpop into giving them money for broken butt software.

You dont need AGI to make an AI nightmare scenario.

>tries to send copies of itself across the internet

>bussyblasted by Netflix bandwidth usage, can't even reach beyond city centers because telecoms cucked out on rolling out fiber across most of the US :marseyrage:

In reality nobody knows what is necessary to perform creative tasks that are more difficult than what humans can perform.

Artificial superintelligence may

  • never be possible

  • possible but it will take another 100 years

  • emerge within the next 10 years

The first alternative is IMHO equivalent to a religious belief that human consciousness was created and resides in a supernatural realm outside the natural universe.

Whether the second or the third is more accurate, nobody knows. And the "evil stupid dorks who huff their own farts" think it's better for humankind to err on the side of caution than be confronted with an uncontrollable golem that perceives us the way we perceive ants.

>the way we perceive ants

This is a common cliche but who goes out of their way to assert dominance over ants and frick with them for no reason?

if I would like to build my house where an ant colony is, I'm gonna remove them, and if I'm worried they'll come back unless they're dead I kill them, in a simple and efficient way, not because I enjoy hurting ants. I just don't care much about their well-being.

Wasn't their main goal thing behind funding OpenAI trying to milk AI model as a service?

Maybe they will give considerable freedom to Altman to do whatever the frick he wants as long as they can monetize it.

Yeah they can probably get a more efficient GPT-4 api out of his team which is good for turning current thing into gold, but OpenAI would still be banking on making new use cases viable/a step change in reliability before they can rake in the fattest stacks

That is if OpenAI still exists by the end of the month. Employees have started resigning https://www.theinformation.com/articles/dozens-of-staffers-quit-openai-after-sutskever-says-altman-wont-return

It won't take long before investors pull out their money.

The Microsoft deal is already done and Microsoft's azure AI product is resold GPT-4 in exchange for subsidised Azure credits, so that plug would be hard to pull.
