lol yeah I read the whole wiki after that comment left me feeling mildly surprised, and lo and behold it's almost certainly biological. And that makes sense evolutionarily. The top male can impregnate lots of females so males should go for high variance. It doesn't pay to be an average male.

it's not even an evolutionary thing, though that argument makes sense for things like risk aversion. it's literally just the X chromosome. bird s*x chromosomes work the opposite way (i.e. the female has one big and one small chromosome, the male has two big ones) and lo and behold, females have more size variance. two copies of a gene vs one = more chances to be dragged closer to the average.
