I doubt it's a lie because the backend that supports cable television is probably full of ancient crap. Cable television hasn't really changed for 20+ years. However, that's entirely the fault of the cable companies for getting fat and complacent with their regional monopolies.

It's 100% an exaggeration. They probably quoted the cost of replacing their entire subscription system, like in its entirety, when in reality the changes wouldn't be nearly as dire.

It's in their best interest to make it seem as absurdly expensive as possible in this process. Their job is to lie. That's what they're paid to do and by golly they'll do it.

How much experience do you have working in old-butt enterprise infrastructure?

None because I value my sanity, but I have worked on old-butt (20+ year old) embedded software before. It was a complete fricking mess.

But still not even remotely close to $100mil. If each developer cost you $500k/yr (incl. benefits, realistically we know they don't pay this much) and you had to hire 40 such developers to work full-time on it for an entire year to implement support for this one law, which really just comes down to making it easier to cancel service, that's still not $100mil, only $20mil. And I'm being EXTREMELY generous in this estimate. In reality they'll do it with like 10 devs that they pay half as much bc no way are these cable companies trying to compete with senior devs from actual tech firms.

The difference here is that this is an entire service architecture. If there's a bunch of old, interconnected crap, then this isn't just adjusting one program. It's a modernization effort across the entire system.

Don't underestimate enterprise budget bloat, either. @UpmarseyIfYouCope don't doubt they're inflating the value because @UpmarseyIfYouCope agree that these guys are full of shit. However, @UpmarseyIfYouCope wouldn't be surprised if it's at least one third of that value due too general enterprise inefficiency, running beyond estimations, etc.

In reality they'll do it with like 10 devs that they pay half as much bc no way are these cable companies trying to compete with senior devs from actual tech firms.

Yeah, and then it takes 8x as long. Not too mention the initial planning and takes a couple months just too get the ball rolling.

Yeah, and then it takes 8x as long.

Given how inefficient I'm sure their management is, I doubt hiring 4x the software engineers would reduce completion time by any more than like... 50% at max. It's going to take a long time because both the software managers and the engineers are both bottom-of-the-barrel r-slurred. It's a cable company. All the good employees are going to work somewhere else for more money and less enterprise bullshit.

You're not wrong that the total cost to them will likely be high, but that has NOTHING to do with the regulation and EVERYTHING to do with how shitty I'm sure their software systems are. They have nobody to blame for that but themselves, certainly not this FTC rule.

Agreed, @UpmarseyIfYouCope said as much in @UpmarseyIfYouCope's first reply. The proposed regulation would just expose their old, crappy system that they've been able too neglect due too having no competition for so long. Frick em, I'd like too say they deserve too die but most of them will just fall back on their ISP division.
