The funny thing about this is that "the code documents itself" is actually a good paradigm to go by, presuming it means code readability and minimal commenting for functional explanations when necessary. External documentation should be for higher-level explanation like architecture. That being said, I doubt that's what the author was going for.

I write comments explaining the code for dummies on my first pass. Then I change my mind about how to implement the feature, but leave the original comments.
