Tried the Vision Pro demo at the Apple Store.

I don't follow the VR space but have used budget devices before (Daydream, PSVR1, Quest 3).

I have to say it's pretty mind blowing.

A lot of the OS already feels mature (it takes a lot of inspiration from iPadOS) and apps feel native.

I think the most outstanding things to me are the gestures and the fluidity of the UI. The gestures are so natural and take a couple minutes to pick up, the UI is so responsive it fades into the background and you don't realize it's tracking your eyes super fast.

Me and my friend found no screen door effect but it is a little blurry - might be early foveated rendering tech.

I highly recommend booking a demo yourself just to check it out, reading reviews like this is no replacement for actually using it.

My first dealbreaker is the lack of macOS tier apps (being able to pull up a display is nice but it's clearly a hack - I want to use the M2 in the device I bought). If I can't open a terminal and I can't compile code then it's not a productivity device.

The other dealbreaker is the price -obviously. This would be an incredibly compelling “cool tech” device at $2k, at $3600 base it's just too expensive. I am glad they shot for “what's the craziest device we can make” but it still disqualifies it for me.

Aren't all these VR things super locked down? I'd consider one if I could root it and use it as I say fit

I mean this is locked down because it's an Apple Device. Quest you can connect to your PC and run any degen VR application you want.

I don't see it taking off for general public, it's too goofy and expensive. But corporate training has potential though. I did dev work for hololens apps and clients were desperate for a good AR training experience but the tech and infrastructure generally fell short.

I was thinking that initially but I think there may be some iPad Pro power users who would love this.

I also I feel like I'm discounting how many people truly don't use “pro” apps like JetBrains or Adobe but still rake in six figs.

Walmart did a rollout of VR corporate training and it was a disaster.

That's because most VR training software is a nightmare and that's even before excluding s*** I can't talk about

Yeah it seems cool for what it is but if I wanted to get into VR I'd probably just get an Index or Vive and set up base stations at home (no chance in heck I'm using a VR headset anywhere else).

For the AR aspect I'd like to just have somewhat regular-looking glasses like what Google glass/enterprise was trying to do. We're probably still 5 years away from having a good option for decent AR glasses that don't have VR functionality.

I mean this is the baseline experience I want for AR glasses.

I have no clue how we minify all the tech to that extent in five years.

VR wise yeah I think a Vive is a better choice if you're not in the Ecosystem.

The problem is you can't play decent games on it and if you could no such games exist that would allow me. Except like maybe scribblenauts unlimited might work.

Maybe I'm drinking too much kool aid but I think they legitimately do want to focus on productivity over gaming.

However that's undermined by not having true power user macOS apps…and also pushing the Spatial video / “Personal Theatre Experience”.

Talking about movies and not games on a VR device is tone deaf even they look very good.

What's encouraging is that, while the price is insane right now, it'll become cheaper and cheaper in the future

I also think Apple can compete at this level vs. getting into a pricing war with Quest or PS. Plays to their strengths better.

Yeah I'm super excited for the a couple components to improve and reduce in cost too. The micro-OLED screen is wild.

Wow, that place is awful! Found them quoting and tagging you there. Also, looks like you responded but they deleted your comments? Seriously, ignore that place. It looks like they just enjoy dumping on things that people enjoy, which is all manner of sad...

Honestly I had no idea that sub existed, apparently neither did she. Then they tagged her over there and... lolcow? Is a thing. It's a person they "milk for lols"; don't ask...

It is way, way, way more toxic than her edit. I think she just edited her post to address her own confusion as to why a group of emotionally stunted folks would do that... but, hey, it's the internet. ¯\\_(ツ)\_/¯
