U got it for $50?! Yeah nobody sells their computer for $50 unless it's stolen

I bought an ex-office PC for $50 not long ago. It's actually a fairly common thing to do to buy them from some business in bulk and then resell. Probz just an incompetent seller.

My guess is they were in Capital One's layoffs last year and never returned their work machine.

Seriously, I bought like four Optiplexes ten years ago for $40 each. I wanted a cheap HTPC on each tv in my house

Two of them are sitting in the basement storage, one still running in the main bedroom

a lot of them won't let you into the BIOS to change the bootable device without the BIOS password.

Pretty common topic on Thinkpad forums.

So you would need to buy a new motherboard and/or CPU at that point? That sucks

If you're really dedicated you could flashed a new cracked BIOS directly to the chip, but this won't work on recent versions because they're cryptographically verified.

A lady 2 doors down from me was on vacation when her company disappeard. Like, there are no successors or assignees, it is now nobody's laptop she was working on a week ago.

It had the computrace activated and there was nobody to call to deactivate it.

I bypassed it for her. It's simple to execute (a batch file at every startup to delete a couple of files), but a pain in the butt to figure out.

I bought an unusable PC

I was pretty bummed about it.

But whoever robbed me was probably more happy to get my money than I was to get my PC.

But I have a questionable amount of decisions, so it's whatever.

When doing a deal like this always meet at a place like library, college, cafe or fast food place, anywhere that doesn't give a shit if you plug in a device. You'll be done by the time any nosey wagie notices you. Or at the very least ask for a video of it working before you meet, but be warned that they can always use a duplicate device.

This is/was common in the used Thinkpad market.

There are some hacked bioses you can flash to get around it but it does require proper "attaching pins to the flash chip" level stuff.

Apple devices of course of Find My which make them bricks if you steal them
