Maybe because I'm a brainlet but while I enjoyed my time using Scheme, LISPs are always seeped in academia and lack practically I found.

Easy to throw together a useful tool in Python with a couple libraries but LISPs always seemed to chase some sort academic purity instead of making good, useful libraries, cowtools and programs.

Lisp isn't going to win any popularity contest any time soon, but Common Lisp is far from an academic language. There isn't much "academic purity" in a language designed to be the amalgam of several other languages combined.
